Assistant County Manager Gene Hodges resigns for similar post in Craven County BY TIM CHANDLER COURIER-TIMES EDITOR tchnn(ller@roxboro-toutler.com Gene Hodges “This is a disappointing loss for all of us.” Those were among the words of Person County Manager Hei di York Tuesday when she ref erenced the resignation of As sistant County Manager Gene Hodges. Hodges, who began working as assistant county manager for Person County in July of last year, announced his resignation from the position Friday Hodges informed %rk that his last day with Person County would be Nov. 30. He is resigning to accept a similar position in Craven County. “The opportunity that awaits me in Craven County will allow me to live closer to my aging parents and allow my wife to be a stay-at-home mom during the formidable teen and pre-K years that my children will be enter ing,” Hodges wrote in his letter of resignation to York. “I thank you for the opportunity to serve Person County over the last 16 months and I truly appreciate having worked with and getting to know the citizens, community and staff of Person County. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Person County Government and the fine people that make up the work force here,” Hodges wrote. “I See HODGES, Page 12 New sidewalk eonstruetion begins onN. Main Street BY GREY PENTECOST COURIER-TIMES STAFF WRITER g(eypentetost@roxboto-tourler.tom Construction is underway on the new sidewalk being built along N. Main Street. The sidewalk will run from the intersection of Madison Boule vard and Carver Drive, up Carver Drive to North Main Street, and then along North Main Street from Carver Drive headed south to Lamar Street. The project is being funded primarily with a federal Conges tion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant, said Interim City Manager Tommy Warren, while a local funding match of 20 per cent was also also required. Total cost for the project is $311,520, which includes engi neering and right of way, said Warren. Division of Public Health urges precautions to prevent norovirus Recent early seasonal out breaks of norovirus in some North Carolina long-term care facilities have prompted state public health officials to issue ad vice on steps everyone can take to avoid this common and unpleas ant gastrointestinal illness. “We recommend vigorous and thorough hand washing with soap and water as the most effec tive way to protect yourself and others against norovirus,” state epidemiologist Dr. Megan Davies said. “Hand sanitizers are not as effective against this hardy vi rus. Noroviruses are extremely contagious and spread through contact with the stool or vomit of an infected person. This can occur either while the person is sick or after they have begun to recover. Noroviruses are easily trans mitted by touching contaminated surfaces or by direct contact or eating food or drinking liquids that have been contaminated with the virus. The site will soon become a public greenspace area. DA Wallace Bradsher named to state’s Child Fatality Task Force BY TIM CHANDLER COURIER-TIMES EDITOR tcban(ller@roxboto-courlet.com Sen. Phil Berger, president of the North Carolina Senate, ap pointed District Attorney Wal lace Bradsher to the state’s Child Fatality Task Force last week. The Child Fatality Task Force is a legislative study commission, which makes recommendations to the state legislature and the governor to reduce child fatalities throughout the state.
